Obituary are one of the defining groups of death metal along with Death and a few others. Like Death, Sepultura and Entombed, during their early years they were mostly concerned with speed and sounding "as brutal as possible." With this disc, however Obituary have successfully re-defined the sound of death metal and have prooven that riffs don't necessarily have to be played at 1000 mph to be heavy. The disc sports loads of Sabbath-inspired mid-tempo riffs, as well as some faster parts, and vocals that are somewhat intelligible while retaining the frightening growl. With the help of downtuning and a decent studio budget, Obituary also managed to capture some of the heaviest guitar tones ever recorded. Picked up this disc and "World Demise" for $3.99 each new at Circuit City.
