Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist, Zakk Wylde's band releases their debut cd that is
surprisingly not heavy metal, rather what we have
here is a heavy version of Skynyrd,
Molly Hatchet or 38 Special.
The band's guitar sound, and some of the songwriting, still
have a heavy metal tone but it still has to be labled Southern Rock. The addition
of banjos, dobros, acoustic guitars and harmonica adds to this down home feel.
Overall, the songwriting and musicianship is stellar but I wish Zakk would not
have handled the vocals. He's not a bad singer, but certainly he is not a Danny
Joe Brown or one of the Van Zant brothers. Occassionally Zakk does a decent
job imitating Rick Medlocke, and once I would have sworn it was Gregg Allman
singing. As would be expected, however, the guitar playing is excellent and
the songwriting is dynamic ranging in speed, style, and intensity.
